Winter Walks Around Watertown

Although the New England weather can be nasty this time of year, it doesn’t stop us from getting where we need to go (we see you, winter bike commuters!) But if the cold weather has you feeling a little stir crazy, there are some beautiful places nearby for getting outside and into the fresh air. Whether you prefer walking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing, here are some beautiful local destinations to check out!

Ten minutes away …

If you’ve never been, our own Mount Auburn Cemetery is a peaceful escape right down Mt Auburn Street from Watertown Square. Visitors can explore the grounds via either a one-mile internal path or two-mile external loop, walking past some of the most famous burial sites in the US. Down load their Mount Auburn App for an easy self-guided experience, or stop by and chat with the friendly volunteers at the entry kiosk for helpful info.

30 minutes away …

Just down the road, the nearby town of Concord has over 900 acres of protected land full of places to explore. One of the most beautiful areas for walking, snow shoeing, or cross-country skiing is the Punkatasset Preserve in Estabrook Woods. With miles of clearly marked trails, a skating pond, and lots of local wildlife, Punkatasset is well worth the short drive from Watertown. Warm up afterwards with coffee or hot chocolate at Haute Coffee in the town center!

Right out our backdoor …

Our own Charles River walkway allows waterfront access and views right in our own backyard! Weather permitting, there are portions that are great for cross-country skiing – regardless, they’re always great for walking too. The Newton Land Trust website has some helpful info on trails they’ve mapped out for you – check them out here
