Giving Back at Holiday Time

Although the days around holiday time are some of the busiest days all year, they’re also ones that remind us how fortunate we are, and inspire many of us to look for ways to pay it forward. Whether you can spare 15 minutes, a few hours, or a whole day, there are many wonderful ways to show your gratitude in the greater Boston area this season. Here are some ideas to consider:

IF YOU HAVE A FEW MINUTES …

IF YOU HAVE A FEW HOURS …

  • Most of us have extra clothing, books, blankets, and other household items we could live without. Why not take a pass through your closets and shelves and pack up donations to drop off at one of these wonderful organizations:

  • Boston’s Room to Grow works to give children from low-income families a decent start in life through parental support and education. They welcome donations of clothing, blankets, books, and more at their Berkeley Street location and other convenient spots.

  • Toys for Tots has donation centers set up in and around Watertown each year at holiday time. Check the Watertown Tab or Watertown News for 2018 locations.

IF YOU HAVE A DAY …

  • Community Servings in Jamaica Plain provides nourishing and delicious meals to families impacted by chronic or critical illness. Volunteers help prep meals in their kitchen, deliver meals to clients, or ride along with a driver. They also make holiday gift bags each year and rely on extra help for their assembly. Check out their Volunteer Calendar for sign-ups.

  • If you’re a runner, check out Back on My Feet Boston, an organization that uses running as motivation for homeless community members to gain back confidence and get on the path to employment and housing. Read more about their unique mission on their website.
