What’s Coming to the New Rep Theatre

The fall arts scene around Boston is buzzing! And luckily for us, we get to enjoy some of the finest quality productions right here in Watertown at our own New Repertory Theatre. For over 30 years now, the New Rep has been bringing some of the most innovative and inspiring theater to the area, including dozens of Boston - and even world - premieres. Their 2018-2019 season is entitled “Awakening”, and is meant to provide a welcoming space for audiences to be entertained as well as inspired to enter an open dialogue about highly relevant themes. Take a look at some of the productions headed to their main stage this fall:

From Obie Award-winning playwright Young Jean Lee, Straight White Men takes place around a holiday dinner table with Ed and his three sons. As the evening unfolds, it becomes clear there’s an issue with son Matt that needs to be dealt with. A fearless and biting comedy about privilege and identity, Straight White Men could not be more topical and relevant.

Winner of three Tony Awards (including Best Musical), 1776 centers on the circumstances surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The New Rep calls this an “exciting, inclusive” reimagining of this early part of our nation’s history, which makes us think Hamilton. A more diverse, realistic reflection of what actual Americans look like, perhaps? Count us in!

While there’s been quite a bit written about the horrific experience of European Jews during the Holocaust, David Meyers’ play We Will Not Be Silent shifts the focus to the topic of ordinary Germans’ response to the rise of Hitler. Lead character Sophie Scholl is based on the real-life German college student who leads the only act of public resistance against the Third Reich, and whose mettle is brutally tested in its aftermath. Provocative and engrossing, We Will Not Be Silent deals with timeless themes of courage, resistance, and endurance.
