Plan a Watertown Staycation

The summertime travel season is in full swing for many folks – but if that’s not in the cards for you right now, there’s plenty to do to right in our own backyard to ease you right into vacation mode! Here are some ideas for fun and relaxed staycation, Watertown style:

After the luxury of waking up withoutyour alarm, grab your newspaper and slide into a booth at Deluxe Town Diner, a local favorite for over 30 years. Chat up the locals and enjoy the diner’s bottomless cup of coffee while you feast on their Colossal Hungry Person Breakfast – a yummy stack of fluffy griddle cakes accompanied by two eggs any style, home fries, and toast.

Next, bike off your meal with a ride along the Charles River, courtesy of the friendly folks at Farina’sThey’ve got an excellent fleet of bikes of all types for rent, available for hourly and daily rates. No need to worry about a helmet or anything else – they’ve got you covered, with all accessories available to rent as well.

Now that you’ve worked up an appetite again, refuel with some delicious vegan fare at Red Lentil Café! We always start with their Grande Nachos, topped with refried black beans and jalapeno Jack, homemade Pico de Gallo, vegan sour cream, fresh jalapenos and guacamole. Next, try their Zen Veggie Burger or Sweet Potato Quesadilla – so guilt-free and so good!

Ready for some quality downtime? The Spa at Mount Auburn Club is one of the best-kept secrets in Watertown – and no, you don’t have to be a club member to go! The Spa is open to the public and offers a wide variety of personalized services that will make you feel like you’ve been on vacation for a month. Indulge in deep tissue massage, or treat yourself to a hydrafacial, followed by a dip in their beautiful lap pool, or a sunning sesh on their private spa deck. You can even ask for a Spa Guest Pass to take advantage of some Mount Auburn Club perks, including towel service, steam room, and sauna. Ahhhhhhh.

As summer afternoons turn into evenings, one of our favorite go-to spots is the patio at Branch Line, where you can sip some rose or craft beer and play a few rounds of bocce to work up a dinner appetite!

Once you’ve suitably beaten your opponents (or tried to – remember, no cheating!) then it’s time for dinner. If you stay at BL, you’ll be treated to the ultimate in casual bistro fare – relaxed and delicious. Although the menu changes with the seasons, we can never resist anything off their rotisserie.

If you want to walk off your drinks before settling into another meal, not even a mile down the road is La Bodega by Salts, one of Watertown’s newest hottest restaurants. Nestled into an old train car, La Bodega offers an impressive array of craft cocktails, spirits, and artfully presented tapas.
