Best Wine Bars

Whether in urban settings or out in the burbs, wine bars are clearly having a moment, and have evolved as an in-demand, often more affordable option for people looking for a quick meal without committing to a full sit-down experience. We took a look at the offerings around Watertown and, while one hasn’t opened up (yet!) in our fair city, there are some wine bars only a T or Uber ride away that are definitely worth the trip! Here are some nearby favorites:

Awarded Best Wine Bar in Best of Boston 2014, Somerville’s Spoke in Davis Square has gotten tons of press and accolades, and with good reason. Chefs Eric Frier of Ribelle fame and Daniel Rodriguez (Clio) have designed an approachable yet innovative menu designed around what’s fresh, local, and shareable. Cocktails are stellar (check out Shipwrecked with Madeira) and their wine list, heavily based in Italy and France, is fantastic. Lots of handholding from the bartenders too, for those new to the wine scene who might want to learn (or try) a thing or two.

A Harvard Square staple, Shays Pub and Wine Bar has been serving up delicious bar food, beer, and wine since 1984. They’ve always made (almost) everything from scratch, and are known for their burgers – all grass-fed beef and perfectly cooked. Their wine selection is straight-forward, nothing too crazy, and features a decent amount of half-bottles – nice option for sharing with a friend. They’ve got seasonal beer and cider on tap, along with a great selection of bottled brews. Plus really nice patio seating in the warmer months!

Next time you’re in Boston, head into Downtown Crossing and park yourself at haley.henry, an innovative and smart addition to the wine bar scene, founded by Haley Fortier of Sportello fame. Tinned fish and wine are the two menu staples in the nautically-themed space, with an old-world heavy wine list boasting lots of half-bottle options. If seafood isn’t your thing, you’ll have plenty of eats to choose from, including several charcuterie options, panini of the day, and Prime Rib Sliders.
