Local Food Pantries

With the holidays on the horizon, November is often a joyful time when we look forward to meals with friends and family gathered together. But for many people in and around Watertown, this time of year can be a stressful one – particularly for those struggling to get food on the table. Food drives are prevalent this time of year, and they are a wonderful way to support those whose holidays would otherwise be bleak. There are also several local food pantries we’ve come to know around Watertown that are worth checking out this holiday season. Here are just a few worth looking into, if you’re looking for ways to give back:

The Watertown Food Pantry, run by the Council on Aging, is located at the rear of Grace Vision Church at 80 Mt. Auburn Street. Food donations can be dropped off on Tuesdays from 9:00-11:30am and Thursdays from 3:00-6:00pm. Non-perishable items are also accepted; a list of the most needed items can be found on their website.

Also in Watertown is the St. Patrick – St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry located at St. Patrick School at 26R Chestnut Street. They currently serve 2,500 Watertown residents and are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00-11:45am. For more information on how to donate or volunteer, call 617-926-7121.

The Newton Food Pantry has been managed independently by volunteers since 1983, serving more than 700 Newton residents per month. They offer many ways to help out including volunteering time, donating goods, running a food drive, and sponsoring fundraisers. Monetary donations are also accepted on their website. Hours of operation are Wednesdays from 1:30-5:00pm and the third Saturday of every month from 11:00am-12:00pm.

The Belmont Food Pantry is located in the Mount Hope Church at 51 Lexington Street. It has been in existence since 1992 and survives solely on local donations from organizations, community members, and schools. The Belmont Food Pantry is open the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9:30-1:30am, the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 5:30-6:30pm, and the fourth Saturday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm. Donations can be made on site during these times.

There are many more reputable food pantries like these in neighboring towns including Cambridge, Somerville, and Waltham. Visit foodpantries.org for more information.
