Must-try Salad Recipes

We’ve brought to you some of the best healthy meals and killer summer salads that you can find here in Watertown. With summer nearly behind us and fall on the horizon, we still can’t get enough leafy greens and veggies in our bowls. Our new favorite foodie activity is to try some of the best salads from local restaurants and replicate them at home. These are some of our latest obsessions:

Stellina Restaurant at 47 Main Street is an Italian restaurant that has been part of the Watertown food scene for twenty-five years. The lunch menu offers a variety of different salads including a fried shrimp salad with romaine, almonds, and Provolone as well as a classic caprese. We suggest sampling, and recreating, their award winning Warm Tomato Salad served at both lunch and dinner. Tomatoes are sautéed in extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and basil and served with grilled crostini and Westfield Farm’s goat cheese. We’re literally salivating!

Porcini’s Italian Restaurant at 68 School Street offers delicious food and fine wine in a fun and cozy atmosphere. While the warm weather hangs on, we like to order up one of their yummy salads and enjoy it on their garden patio. Their Walnut & Gorgonzola salad is made with endive and Mesclun greens tossed with a raspberry-walnut vinaigrette and topped with pancetta, Gorgonzola cheese, toasted walnuts, and croutons. The combination of the creamy cheese with the crunchy nuts and croutons is super satisfying and fun to eat!

You may already be familiar with Not Your Average Joe’s – their bread is so addicting! We love to stop into their location at 55 Main Street for their take on classic Tuna Nicoise salad. This one is good for you and, surprisingly, pretty easy to make at home. Their version includes: rare-seared sushi-grade tuna, potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, capers, nicoise olives, roasted peppers, red onion, radishes, cherry tomatoes, and green beans. Making it at home and don’t have the time or budget for sushi-grade tuna? No worries, give it a try with some regular tuna canned in water!

We love the southwestern twist on the chop salad that Halfway Café, at 394 Main Street, puts on their Chipotle Chop Salad. You probably have most of the fixings for this salad in your fridge already. This one is made with romaine lettuce, roasted corn, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, avocado, tortilla strips, and black beans with a chipotle ranch dressing. We like to throw in some grilled chicken or shrimp to bulk it up a bit.
