Meet Your State Officials

Does the recent Presidential election and its excitement have you glued to your smartphone, anticipating the latest news in politics? If so, it might be a good time to check out your local scene and get acquainted with your state officials. There is currently one elected State Senator and two elected State Representatives working on behalf of the residents of Watertown, MA.

State Senator William N. Brownsberger is a democrat currently serving the Middlesex and 2nd Suffolk Districts. Brownsberger is a graduate of Harvard Law School and has served in the Massachusetts State Senate since 2012. Previously, Brownsberger worked as the Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General from 1992-1998 as well as the Belmont Board of Selectmen from 1998-2007. In addition, Brownsberger serves on several committees and is currently the Chairperson for the Joint Committee on the Judiciary and as Vice Chair for the Senate Committee on Ethics.

State Representative Jonathan Hecht is a democrat currently serving the 29th Middlesex District. Hecht grew up in Belmont, MA and went on to Stanford University. After Stanford, Hecht received an M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University as well as a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. Hecht was elected to the Watertown Town Council in 2005, where he and his family have lived for the last twenty years, and was elected State Representative in 2008. Hecht serves on the Joint Committee on Children, Families, and Persons with Disabilities, the Joint Committee on Election Laws, the Joint Committee on Public Health, and the House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change.

State Representative John J. Lawn, Jr. is a democrat currently serving the 10th Middlesex District. Lawn attended Saint Patrick’s High School in Watertown and graduated from Merrimack College in 1991. In addition to his role as a legislator, Lawn is a broker and owner of Charles River Real Estate. He has also served on the Watertown Town Council since 2006, is on the Board of Directors of the Watertown Boy’s and Girl’s Club and volunteers for the Special Olympics. Finally, Lawn is a Chairperson on the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs.
