How to Grill Like a Boss

Summer is in full swing, which means lots of rooftop diningcoastal getaways and margarita sipping. The warm weather also seems to stoke our primal urge to grill things, whether we own our own equipment or take advantage of the free grills at Watertown parks. But hold up - are you one of those people who love the taste of grilled cuisine, but haven’t ever actually worked up the nerve to cook some yourself? No stress – we have everything you need to get the job done, in and around Watertown!

Let’s start with the basics, meaning the proper equipment. Whether you need a full-sized gas grill to feed a crowd, or a two-burner model for a smaller space, Home Depot on Arsenal Street has the biggest selection in Watertown. They’re also fully stocked with any kind of accessory you could possibly want, including grilling tool sets, veggie baskets, and more. While offering a smaller selection, Target also has a decent grill and accessory collection, at great prices.

Next, there’s learning the basics of grilling. Luckily there are lots of options around, whether in person or online. The Cambridge School for Adult Education is offering their “Grillicious! Summer Time to BBQ” course on July 20th, featuring the basic techniques of marinating and grilling steaks, chicken kabobs, and shrimp skewers. Sur La Table in Boston also offers grilling courses, as does the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts.

If you’d rather learn online, Amazing Ribs is widely considered the best grilling site on the web; check it out, along with their companion YouTube Channel that offers helpful demo videos. Grilling Companion is another great resource; they also have apps for iPhone and Android. Their meat temperature chart alone is so easy to follow, it will have you throwing down those ribs in no time.

And now to the good stuff – where to find the best meat, fish, and veggies to throw on the grill! You can’t beat the amazing vendors at the Watertown Farmers’ Market, open Thursdays from 2-6 PM through October. You’ll find everything from the freshest fish and vegetables to locally sourced beef, pork, lamb, and poultry. Watertown’s The Meat Spot is one of the most well known custom meat butchers around, drawing customers from all over Metro Boston. They’ve got an amazing selection of beef, lamb, and chicken, and are super helpful with the grilling tips. And if you need more fish options, head to Steamers Fish Market in Newton – well worth the few minutes’ drive to get the best selection around.
