Healthy Summer Meals

Summer is almost here, and along with it comes lots of long, lazy lunches. For some reason (probably the inevitability of baring more skin), the warm weather has us craving food that is light, fresh, and healthy. A salad is always a great option, of course - but there are lots more healthy offerings around town that will leave you feeling satisfied without feeling overstuffed!

Locally sourced vegan cuisine is the mission behind Wild Rice Vegan Cafe, an east end gem brought to you by the folks behind Red Lentil (more on them below).  A favorite menu item of ours is the TexMex Enchilada - who can say no to healthy Mexican food! They stuff a tortilla (whole wheat or gluten-free) with sweet potatoes, black beans, spinach, vegan cheese, other veggies, and finish it off with a mole sauce. Yum!

The Red Lentil also offers a vegan menu alongside dozens of vegetarian options. Try the Portabella Saute - a mushroom cap simmered in white wine, garlic, and shallots, topped with herbs and walnut goat cheese rounds. If that weren’t enough, the entire dish is then drizzled with a maple balsamic glaze (they had us at “goat cheese rounds”).

Roksana’s Persian Food offers a fun alternative to your everyday salads and sandwiches. A large portion of their menu features grilled lamb, beef, or chicken kababs served with rice and grilled tomatoes. We also really enjoy the grilled salmon that they marinate in saffron, olive oil, and Persian spices. You’ll be so glad you gave this place a try if you haven’t already!

If you prefer to drink your meal, head on over to MixStirs located inside the Boston Sports Club on Arsenal Street. Their smoothies are made with fresh fruits, low-fat milk or yogurt, and you can add protein powder if you’re looking for an extra boost. If you love peanut butter with chocolate as much as we do, then be sure to try the Peanut Butter Blast. The combo of banana, peanut butter, vanilla yogurt, and chocolate whey protein is to die for!
