Holiday Meal Solved!

If you’re on the hook to serve up a holiday meal this year, you’re living in the right place.  Watertown has one of the best locations in New England for the freshest local produce, specialty meats, prepared foods, cheeses, and baked goods – all under one roof. If you’ve never been to A. Russo and Sons, now’s the time to make the trip and watch your holiday meal prep get a whole lot easier. Here’s how to get it all done ahead, and in one visit!

Start at the produce section, where you’ll find an enormous selection of fresh fruit and veggies, in any variety you could think of:

**Buying ahead tip: any intact vegetable will keep for several days in the fridge. If your shopping list includes fresh greens or herbs, wash them/spin them dry and layer them with damp paper towel in an unsealed plastic bag or plastic container. They’ll keep for at least 7 days without wilting!

On to the delicatessen, where you can find lots of yummy specialty meats and cheeses to keep your guests munching and happy while you get the meal ready. Russo’s has an insane variety of cheeses and condiments from all over Europe, as well as imported Italian cured meats like prosciutto, salami, Spanish Jamon, and house-roasted turkey breast and roast beef.

*** Buying-ahead tip: when wrapped well, sliced cured meats will last 5-6 days in the fridge. Packaged meats last 7-10 days, and hard salami 2-3 weeks. The harder the cheese, the longer it keeps; soft cheeses intact in their original wrapping should last one week in the fridge, with hard cheeses like Parmesan good for 3-6 weeks.

Thinking of adding starch to the menu? Russo’s has so many takes on fresh pasta that you might consider serving some, either as a side dish or as an entrée alternative for any non-meat eaters in the crowd.  They even offer gluten-free options!

**Buying-ahead tip: any type of fresh pasta freezes really well. If you choose ravioli, freeze them in a single layer first before tossing them in a freezer bag for storage; that will prevent them from freezing stuck together.

When it comes to prepared foods, Russo’s selection is broad enough to satisfy even the pickiest eaters at your holiday table. Their standard menu includes traditional hot pasta entrees, homemade soups, roasted meats and seasonal vegetable dishes. They’ll have a special holiday menu to order from as well, so make sure to check that out.

And don’t even think of leaving Russo’s without checking out their bakery – now’s your chance to look like a total boss, finishing the meal like this

Or what about a cookie platter? They bake over 12 amazing varieties!

**Buying-ahead tip: While Russo’s stocks its bakery fresh every day, you’re smart to order ahead so that your pie, cheesecake, mousse cake, or cookies will all be boxed and ready for you when you arrive.

And one more thing – if you find yourself too strapped for time to do any cooking at all, Russo’s has you covered there too. Their catering department whips up appetizer platters, salads, starters, soups, entrees, side dishes, and desserts – all at a competitive price.
