Fall Fun at the Apple Orchards

Apple picking is the quintessential New England fall activity - who can resist walking through a gorgeous orchard on a crisp day while munching on apple cider donuts? We certainly can’t! Lucky for us, there are a plethora of orchards within a short drive of Watertown where you can pick your own apples and pumpkins. Remember, apple season ends in mid-October, so put on your coziest sweater and scarf, grab your favorite pumpkin spiced drink and enjoy some leaf peeping as you head out exploring!

- Belkin Family Lookout Farm in South Natick is one of the oldest continuously working farms in the United States. The orchard boasts over 60,000 fruit trees and a train transports pickers from one variety to the next. Families will love the children’s play area complete with farm animals, a hay pyramid and a maze. Adults can imbibe in their hard cider taproom, open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Grab some pumpkins and homemade apple butter on your way out, you’ll be glad you did!

-  A bit of a further drive will land you at Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stow. Family owned and operated since 1926, Honey Pot Hill offers PYO apples and pears as well as hedge mazes, farm animals and hayrides. Their farm store offers fruits and veggies grown on-site and all of the fall themed treats you could ever want: freshly pressed cider, cider donuts, pies and caramel apples.

-  Also in Stow is Shelburne Farm, the oldest PYO apple orchard in eastern Massachusetts. They offer peaches, pumpkins, over twenty varieties of apples and a fully stocked Apple Store. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Applewood Grill, open on weekends, indulge in warm apple crisp and fresh baked pies and be sure to try one of their twenty flavors of farm fresh ice cream. And for the road, choose one of their “almost famous” caramel apples with your choice of topping: peanuts, cashews, M&Ms, candy corn and more!

-  Head on out to Westward Orchards on Sundays through Columbus Day for live bluegrass music from 1:30-4:30pm. While there, be sure to stock up on PYO apples and take a wagon ride to their pumpkin patch. And, they offer a fantastic daily lunch menu as well as breakfast on the weekends. A drive out to Harvard may seem like an undertaking at first but, with everything that Westward Orchards has to offer, you can certainly make an entire day out of it!

No time to spend a day at the orchard? Head on out to the Watertown Farmer’s Market on Thursdays from 2-6pm where you’ll be sure to find a wide array of scrumptious fall snacks. Plus, vendor Apex Orchards from Shelburne is there every week selling their own apples, pears, peaches, grapes and honey.
