Hidden Gems of the Watertown Food Scene

We all feel pretty lucky living in Watertown with endless food options, from farm-to-table to the best-quality ethnic cuisines to food trucks. With all those choices, it can be easy to miss some tasty opportunities sitting right under our noses (as it were). Our blogging crew is more than happy to help solve that problem – check out some surprises we discovered this month!

  • While we’ve been known to fork over some dough if the taste is right, who wouldn’t want to eat well for less? Manita Bunnagitkam's homegrown Thai eatery Chai Yen Thai Cookery is committed to serving up the freshest take on traditional and specialty dishes, while keeping prices below $10 an entrée. She’s trained with the best in the business, and makes every dish to order – trust us, you’d happily pay a lot more for her tasty offerings.

  • If the cooler fall temps are tempting you towards steaming hot bowls of ramen, StripTs hosts a Ramen Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 2:30-5 PM. Sounds amazing, and we’re in.

  • If you’ve always wanted to try your hand behind the line, Kareem’s Chef and Owner Ahmad Yasin offers cooking classes at his Common Street location. In the business for over 25 years, Yasin teaches the basics of Arabic/Syrian cuisine and fundamental techniques, as well as where to find the freshest local ingredients to build what he calls a harmonious Arabic meal. Head to his restaurant website for registration details.

  • If you’ve never heard of potato cake, you’re about to get schooled, Danish style.

This amazing loveliness is incredibly tasty and actually contains zero potato anything. Instead, the expert bakers at Danish Pastry House start with a crisp choux pastry shell, fill it with Bavarian cream and fresh sliced strawberries, and top it with cocoa-dusted marzipan. Who knew anything resembling a spud could send us sailing into sweetness euphoria.

  • Craving a little opera with your dinner? Local Italian favorite Stellina’s Restaurant is famous for its Opera Night extravaganzas, featuring three courses of their signature Italian courses interspersed with three sets of live opera performances. Their next Opera Night on September 18th has a Shakespeare theme, and will likely be a sell out. Reserve your table now on their website.
