EEW Meet and Greet: S&A Cigars

One of the best parts of our job is getting to know the amazing people managing local businesses in Watertown. We recently caught up with one of the friendliest of all, Steven Eskici, co-owner of S&A Cigars on Mount Auburn Street! If you don’t know Steve or anything about S&A, your life is about to get soooo much better.

1. Tell us a little about your business – is it family-owned? How did you get started?

We are a family owned business - father and son.  It all started 11 years ago when Big John decided he wanted to open up a cigar lounge after being a cigar lover for over 40 years.  Steven came in afterwards and opened up the business by providing marketing across all social media platforms, as well as our website that supplies cigars all over America. Along with our lounge environment, we pride ourselves on having some of the rarest cigars on the market, such as the highly sought after “Opus X”.  We work our hardest to have the best selection in Boston!

2. Who are your typical customers? Do most people coming in know what they want, or is there a fair amount of customer education that happens in the shop?

There is no such thing as “typical customer” in our situation.  Sometimes we sit back and see the interesting mix of people surrounding a table enjoying a cigar and conversation.  Ages range from 21 to as old as it gets, any background you can imagine, and absolutely any occupation you can imagine.  It’s always interesting seeing doctors, electricians, plumbers, entrepreneurs, you name it - sitting around and sharing their opinions on the world’s problems.  The best part is there is absolutely no hierarchy - everybody’s opinion is respected on the same level.

As far as education goes, there are customers who know exactly what they want and have been smoking the same cigars for the last 10 years … and then there are customers who are new to the game or just want to try something different.  We love to educate people on cigars. Our goal is to get them the cigar their palate is craving that particular day.

3. How do people typically find out about you?

They usually hear about us online.  We’re active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and people have been very kind to us on Yelp. We also frequently update our website and blog about new products, cigar conventions we attend, that kind of thing.

4. What do you like about doing business in Watertown?

Our family was born and raised in Watertown, so it’s always fun seeing people that we went to middle school or high school with come in and enjoy a cigar with us.  Cigar smokers are usually extremely laid back people.  Most come in for the atmosphere, along with a good conversation.  Watertown provides such a range of ages and ethnicities, it is always a learning experience to embrace people for who they are.  It’s also fun to learn about different cultures and educate people on our Armenian Culture - especially our food.

5. What are some of your favorite Watertown spots to go to?

We love eating local. There’s great sushi at Super Fusion, awesome Greek food at Demos and W House has amazing subs.  Extra Innings is always a fun time for some batting practice.  Donahues is great for seeing friends and having a beer. If you need alterations check out John’s Tailoring at 129 Mt. Auburn St! And not to be biased, but S&A is the most fun place to be to watch sports - especially during football season, with our 4 60” screens and comfy chairs and sofas!
