Summer is the perfect time for reading. Picture yourself engrossed in a novel while swinging in a hammock in the shade, or flipping through a magazine on a beach chair in the sun. Imagine yourself listening to an audio book while you’re out for a jog, or perusing an e-reader while you travel to a lovely vacation spot.

For children, reading throughout the summer months can help avoid the “summer slide,” the decrease in reading ability that often results from months without going to school. Summer reading programs help prevent this by encouraging kids to stay excited about reading all summer long!

But Summer Reading’s not just for kids! Here at the Watertown Free Public Library, we’ve got fun Summer Reading programs for teens and adults too!

The Teen Summer Reading Kickoff is on Friday, June 24 with an ice cream party! Kids entering 6th grade or higher in the fall can sign up to participate in book bingo with the chance to win prizes.

Monday, June 27 kicks off Summer Reading for adults and kids. This year’s theme for children is On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! We’ll be focusing on dual goals of exercise and reading. Kids can sign up to keep track of how much time they spend reading and exercising, and we’ll all vote on a special prize if we achieve our collective goals!

Adults can find all sorts of great book suggestions and read-alikes based on this year’s theme: Exercise Your Mind. Read! Just head upstairs and check out the displays. You’ll never be at a loss for what to read or listen to next!

Plus, we’ll have amazing programs every single day to keep you and the family busy. Check out our calendar of events to find out what’s going on that will fit your schedule.

So no matter what your age, this summer can be all about reading! Come on in to the library to sign up or to find your next great read!
