Where to Grill and Chill

July in Watertown is the best, right? Particularly when it comes to food – we’ve got tons of outdoor dining options, weekly trips to the Farmers Market, and those amazing Food Truck Wednesdays. We don’t know about you, but the summer weather’s also stoking our primal urge to grill – dogs, veggie burgers, anything that feels like summer. If you’re with us but don’t exactly have access to a grill, we’ve found the perfect outdoor eating spots for you! There are some parks right here in Watertown that have plenty of space for you and your friends to grill up some food, eat outside, maybe even squeeze in a few pick-up games after. Check these out:

  • Arsenal Park offers over 13 acres of space, right behind the Marshalls at 485 Arsenal Street. The picnic areas and grills are available for rental through the town, and include 19 picnic tables (some covered), 5 standard-sized grills plus 4 double-sized. Plus there’s tons of rec space, including basketball, tennis, volleyball and bocce courts (yep!); the bike path is right there, and there’s even space for street hockey, soccer - basically any outdoor activity you’re into. Bathrooms available on weekends only. Head to the town website for info on how to reserve grills and eating space!

  • Filippello Park at 109 Arlington Street features 14 tree-lined acres with lots of shady areas to hang out. There are 10 picnic tables and 6 grills available for booking through the town (you have to be a Watertown resident), with six of those tables are under protective wooden structures. Filippello has two basketball courts, a street hockey court, and several fields available with lights on request (now’s your chance to live the FNL dream). There’s even a sprinkler park to run through! Parking’s a breeze, with a lot at the Grove Street entrance as well as on street parking along Arlington Street. Head to the town website to see about reserving grill and picnic space.

  • If you want to skip the grill and just bring along your picnic basket, head to Saltonstall Park, behind the Town Administration Building at 149 Main Street. There’s lots of shaded picnic benches and green space, and it’s in a great location if you need to stay close to town. Great for a lazy weekend lunch or a quick escape from the workday.
