Harvard Square Happenings

The students might be gone from Harvard Yard, but the pulse in Harvard Square only gets stronger in the summer months. There’s no end to events happening in all corners of this tightly-packed neighborhood, from story slams to dance parties – here are some highlights to get psyched for!

  • Iranian-American-Muslim stand-up comedian Negin Farsad reads from her book How to Make White People Laugh at the Harvard Book Store June 3 at 7 PM. In her funny, frank, and disarming style, Farsad takes on the concepts of race and religion and what it means when white culture defines black reality (other favorite topics like Duck Dynasty and wine slushies might come up). Go here for more info.

  • Ready for a dance party? Boston electronic pop quartet Bearstronaut promises to rock the Sinclair Friday June 10 as they treat the hometown crowd to their signature tropical synth-pop sound. 18+. Click here for ticket info.

  • FiRE + iCE brings the heat this summer with Brazil night every Thursday! Learn Brazilian Forro dance styles with a free lesson, and then flaunt your new moves to the groove of local band Cabras Da Peste who promises to keep the party going all night long! 18+ with ID required.

  • Prefer to be the one in the spotlight? Head on over to Open Mic Tuesdays at Club Passim. Performance order is determined by lottery and all ages/abilities are welcome. You can add your name to the list beginning at 6:30 (list closes at 8:30), and each performer gets 2 songs or 10 minutes, whichever comes first. Poetry, stories and other performance genres welcome – just no drums or amps, and no prerecorded tracks. More info here.

  • Jump-start your summer at the Harvard’s Annual Summer Solstice Celebration Monday June 20! Hosted by the Museums of Science and Culture, the evening will feature live music, dance performances, food trucks and circus performers, along with hands-on activities for all ages. Plus Harvard’s opening several of the museums to the public at no charge! Entire event is free for all ages and runs from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. Get more info here.
