SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE OPERA

SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE OPERA begins another season on SUNDAY JANUARY 24 at 5:30 with a program titled LITERARY OPERA.

Once again Stellina welcomes the singers and pianists from Opera-On-Tap, a consortium of professional performers based in Boston. Three sets of music will be interspersed with a three-course dinner of Stellina’s regional Italian specialties.

Since the beginning of musical history, classical composers have been attracted to popular literary works as a basis for their compositions. From Aeschylus and Shakespeare to Steinbeck, Hemingway and Fitzgerald, pairing great novels with great music has been the ultimate challenge.

The list is extensive, and includes works such as War and Peace (Tolstoy-Prokofiev), Billy Budd (Melville-Britten) and  Lucia di Lammermoor (Robert Burns-Donizetti). William Shakespeare’s plays has been “covered” by dozens of musicians, with Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Othello attracting the interest of talents as diverse as Gounod, Adam, Nicolai, Verdi and Rossini.

The list of modern musicals based on best sellers is almost as long, starting with Les Miserables and The Man of La Mancha to Ragtime and Phantom of the Opera.

The highlight of the evening will be an appearance by members of MetroWest Opera, presenting a special preview of their upcoming spring performances of Mark Adamo’s opera “Little Women”, based on Louisa May Alcott’s  immortal novel. This is considered by many one of America’s most exciting modern operas. (See below for more details about MetroWest’s performances)

“Mark Adamo’s ”Little Women” is some sort of masterpiece…The libretto proceeds with amazing sureness…We come to love the complexity of Jo’s character”- New York Times review of Little Women by John Rockwell

“A masterly and often poetic distillation: Jo and her sisters are touchingly drawn, often with humor, and Mr. Adamo’s sense of timing is nearly perfect”- —Allan Kozinn, The New York Times
